I visited Siena a few years ago. It was such a joy to wander around such a beautiful city without the noise and hassle of cars. Not that there isn't a buzz, but it's just more human than so many other cities. You will have a bit of a walk from the station, if that's how you're getting there. I came on a day trip from Florence, changing at Empoli- it was a pleasant journey, through fabulous Tuscan countryside.
The Piazza del Campo is quite spectacular, though I didn't make it for the Palio unfortunately. The Duomo was also very impressive. But I really found with Siena, and other old Italian cities for that matter, that the best part is just wandering round the piazzi, cafes, backstreets, markets, and old churches. Don't just doggedly follow the guidebook! |
