One of the many attractive things about Florence is that it's not overwhelmingly big. I think a nice rule of thumb is that you should be able to walk around a city.
On one visit to Florence a few years ago, I took a walk up to Piazza Michelangelo (a square high above the city, across the Arno from the Uffizi, which has one of the three Davids). On a whim, rather than heading straight back down to the city, I decided to explore further up the hill. I quickly found myself on the outskirts of Florence, and took a long arc along a fairly rural road, with real countryside views, back towards all the hubbub around Ponte Vecchio. It was a real treat.
I can be very rewarding to think out of the box, and not just follow the tourist trail, especially in a place as rich as Florence. |
